Parking in Mumbai has been a consistent problem. Mumbaikars face issues on every day basis despite BMC arranging for many parking lots in the city, and there seems to be no solution to this problem.

As per recent development, it is being said that the cost to park the vehicle in selected areas of the city like Fort, Bandra Kurla Complex, Lower Parel and Goregaon may increase by five times. With this move, BMC aims to promote the use public transport thereby reduce congestion on the roads due to Parking.

Talking about the same Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner Ajoy Mehta has said that the officials have been considering to apply this during the business and busy hours of the day to make sure Mumbaikars are discouraged for bringing their vehicles.

However, it has also been reported that the body will not implement the same immediately. Currently, the plan is in the early phase of implementation where a body is mapping several wards in the city to understand the parking facility, and the busy hours in designated areas of Mumbai. This will help the BMC to enforce a rule where one may have pay more to park during busy hours. Further, one may have to pay a heavy fine if the vehicle is parked outside the designated area.

Some associations feel that this move by the BMC will also reduce pollution and will turn out to be the best way to work around the congestion tax, which has been a point of discussion for many years now. Many busy cities around the world like London, Singapore and others charge the citizens to park in the busy areas during peak traffic hours.
