On Tuesday, June 1, Mumbai and its neighbouring areas receive light downpour bringing about relief to the citizens across the city.

Moreover, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier in the day predicted that Mumbai and Thane will receive thunderstorms with lightning, rain and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places. KS Hosalikar, from the IMD, had further stated that “severe weather” warnings have been issued for the upcoming five days in Maharashtra.

According to reports, in addition to Mumbai, pre-monsoon rains are also touted to hit regions like Beed, Hingoli, Kolhapur, Konkan, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sangli, Satara, and Thane. Earlier on Monday, May 31, Mumbai witnessed small spells of pre-monsoon showers with the city recording 48.2mm of rainfall.

This comes as Mumbai received persistent spells of rain as a result of Cyclone Tauktae and its proximity to the city’s coast. Several trees were also uprooted as a result of the severe winds that followed. Moreover, data showed that around 230mm of rainfall hit the city during the cyclonic storm.

The data shared by IMD further illustrates that Mumbai has already witnessed 1,105 per cent excess pre-monsoon rain between March 1 and May 31 as a result of Tauktae. Furthermore, the city recorded 304mm of rainfall as compared to the season average of 20.2mm.
