In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) budget a sizable portion of INR 115.46 crore was set aside for the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan also popularly known as the Byculla Zoo.

The budget states that the development works of the modernization project of the zoo are being conducted in a phased manner. In the year 2020-21, expenditure worth INR 43 crore was incurred for the second phase of development works.

In the second phase, the construction of the remaining three animal exhibits (Otter, Sambar and Barking deer and Nilgai and Four-horned antelope) is arriving at completion.

On the site of the old offices of the Zoo and Garden department, development work of the landscape garden and adjoining land has been finished.

Additionally, on the first floor of the zoo’s Interpretation Centre, a new interpretation facility depicting various Bio-diversity Zones around Mumbai prominent areas such as Gateway of India, National Park, Mangroves, beach, Sewri creek, Flamingos amongst others has been developed. Herein, visitors can take a virtual tour of these places through video walls, 3D films, amongst others.

In its third phase, a proposal has been put forward to develop a Zoo extension facility on the two adjacent plots that measure around 10 acres wherein exhibits for various exotic species will be developed. These include the likes of Giraffe, Zebra, White Lion, Jaguar, etc for which Request For Proposals (RFPs) are being finalized.
