On Tuesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray released a book, “The Dharavi Model” that depicts the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) battle against the coronavirus in Mumbai’s Dharavi which is Asia’s largest slum, stated reports. Assistant Municipal Commissioner, G-North, Kiran Dighavkar wrote the book.

He was one of the most important players in the civic authority’s battle against covid-19 in Dharavi. He spearheaded the fight to curb the incidence of the virus during both waves since the pandemic broke out in March 2020.

The book includes first-person instances of many officials and frontline workers who fought the battle. According to accounts, the book extensively elucidates how the civic authority tracked the virus’s first case in the slum, to the distribution of food during the initial national lockdown, the opening of clinics in Dharavi and door-to-door testing of residents. It also elaborates on the international acclaim the model received and the behind-the-scenes of warriors who led the city out of the crisis. These include the likes of medical professionals; staff is ward war rooms as well.

Additionally, the CM has written the foreword for the book. With an estimated population of over 7 lakh people, Dharavi is spread across 2.1sqkm. Reports also say, that the first case in the slum pocket was reported on April 1, 2020, a few days after the first patient was found in the city.
