On Thursday, June 16, the State Election Commission (SEC) pushed the deadline to release the draft ward-wise voters' list for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, reports stated. Now, the draft electoral rolls of the city amongst 13 other municipal corporations will be published on June 23, reports stated.
In accordance with the earlier plan, the draft voters' list for the 14 civic wards was to be published on June 17. However, now, the state has been pushed to June 23. Therefore, the final list which was to be made public on July 1 will now be declared on July 9, accounts highlighted.
Based on narratives, the order was issued by Kiran Karundkar, SEC Secretary who also mentioned that citizens can send their suggestions and objections on the voters' list between June 23 and July 1.
The SEC had proclaimed the election schedule on June 2 after the Supreme Court's order in the case reinforcing the OBC reservations. Additionally, the judiciary had permitted the SEC to postpone the elections in those cities where monsoon is heavy.
While the elections are supposed to be conducted without the OBC quota, the lottery for other reservations was recently drawn. However, the state is putting together empirical data for the OBC quota to be able to submit it to the court so it can be enforced.
