A plot near Nariman Point that was originally meant to be used as a public park will be converted into a garden for Maharashtra MLAs. This will be part of an upcoming MLA hostel that will come up near Nariman Point.

The hostel is on the spot where the old Manora hostel existed which has since been demolished to construct the new building. The new hostel is expected to be built at a cost of ₹900 crores.

The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) has asked the Mumbai City Collector to transfer 4,295 square metres of the empty land to the Manora redevelopment project for the MLA garden. Officials familiar with the matter said that the PWD could finalize the tender for this project by the end of July.

Executive Engineer for the PWD, Chandrakant Naik said that although he wrote to the Mumbai City Collector around four months ago, they haven’t received a response. It’s worth pointing out that the transfer of the plot will require final approval by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Speaking to The Indian Express, Mumbai City Collector Rajiv Nivatkar said, “The plot is in the possession of Mumbai Metro for parking machinery. I am awaiting government orders to transfer the same to the Manora project.”
