Raigad district collector to repoen Matheran for tourists from tomorrow

Mumbaikars and people from different parts of the state visit Matheran to enjoy the climate and nature's scenic beauty. However, due to the lockdown, Matheran was closed to tourists for the last several months.

Against the backdrop of increasing coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, the state government had imposed strict lockdown-like restrictions. 

According to the government's guidelines, tourist spots and markets in many districts were closed. However, after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government decided to unlock the state in five phases, many places were thrown open for tourists and locals.

Though, it has come to light that one of the most popular tourist spots, Matheran in Raigad district, which is under ‘Level 4’, continues to have several restrictions.

Recently, many tourists were stopped at the foot of the Ghat and banned from going to Matheran. 

Meanwhile, locals residents argued that Matheran has not had a single COVID-19 case in recent times and even 95 per cent of the locals have been vaccinated. The locals claim that there are hardly any patients in the village and now the tourists should be allowed. They also mentioned that these restrictions have impacted their businesses since last year.

Therefore, Raigad District Collector Nidhi Chaudhary has decided to open Matheran from Saturday, June 26. Level 3 restrictions will be imposed at some places. 

Considering the dependence of the local population on tourism, the number of cases and the high rate of vaccination. The administration is positive about it, said the district collector.
