Last week, heavy rains resulted in floods in the Konkan coast and other parts of western Maharashtra. Thus, on the instructions of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, relief and medical teams of the corporation have been immediately dispatched to help the affected.

Upon their arrival, the teams have commenced relief work under the guidance of the local authorities.

In the Mahad area, 65 officers, two teams of volunteers, coupled with one volunteer team of 40 people in Kolhapur, are working towards cleaning and disinfection. Similarly, a medical team comprising 15 doctors and paramedical staff are conducting health check-ups in the Chiplun area. Another team of 24 doctors and paramedical staff are doing the same in the Mahad region.

During these adverse conditions, the relief teams of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation are reassuring the locals whilst also collecting garbage and cleaning the mud. The team is equipped with essential items such as durables, shovels, spades, empty sacks amongst others to fill the garbage. Additionally, reports state that they also have masks, hand gloves, gumboots and disinfectants. One JCB machine, four tankers, three mini tipper trucks, and two dumpers have been sent for the relief works too.

Sodium hypochlorite and spraying pumps have been provided in conjunction with coveted preventive measures. After cleaning the houses and their surroundings, sodium hypochlorite is sprayed for disinfection. Chemicals will also be sprayed, to remove odour, with separate arrangements for pesticide spraying.

Similarly, many animals have also died, and thus, the corporation’s relief team will dispose of them too. The Municipal Corporation’s health team have gone to the areas designated by the local authorities in Mahad and Chiplun to conduct health check-ups and offer medical treatment.
