The Indian Hotel and Restaurants’ Association has welcomed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s move to extend the deadline for shops and establishments to have Marathi signboards till September 30.

This is the third deadline extension accorded by the civic body, which was extended the deadline to June 30, after the retailers and restaurants’ association sought additional time.

Accepting the revised order, AHAR President, Shivanand Shetty said: "We had moved the Bombay High court seeking an extension of deadline towards implementing  Marathi signboards, and are glad that the civic body has granted us an extension till 30th September 2022, for enforcement of the above mandate. This which will definitely ease some pressure off us and ensure higher compliance rate.”

The civic body had first set the deadline on May 15 but later extended it to July 1.

BMC had decided to implement the Marathi signboard policy and brought out a circular in the first week of April, after the state government amended the Shop and Establishment Act in March 2022 which mandated that signboards on all shops and establishments must have names written in Marathi.

The order specified that the Marathi font size must be bigger than that of other languages. If these rules are not adhered to, a penalty of up to INR 1 lakh and a fine of INR 2,000 per day would be levied if the law is not complied with.

There are 5.08 lakh shops and establishments registered with BMC.
