On Tuesday, July 12, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) extended its deadline for shops and establishments to have Marathi signboards till September 30, reports stated. This is the second extension accorded by the civic body, which had earlier extended the deadline to June 30.

The civic body had first set the deadline on May 15 but later extended it to July 1. Based on accounts, officials attribute the extension in deadline to the shopkeepers association seeking additional time.

Earlier an association of traders and shopkeepers have written a letter to the then Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asking for a six-month extension to the June 30 deadline to put up Marathi signboards in establishments and shops in Mumbai.

The civic body had decided to implement the Marathi signboard policy and brought out a circular in the first week of April, after the state government amended the Shop and Establishment Act in March 2022 which mandated that signboards on all shops and establishments must have names written in Marathi.

The order specified that the Marathi font size must be bigger than that of other languages. If these rules are not adhered to, a penalty of up to INR 1 lakh and a fine of INR 2,000 per day would be levied if the law is not complied with.

There are 5.08 lakh shops and establishments registered with BMC.
