According to reports, the Maharashtra government has approved financial assistance of over INR 138 crores for the families of state police officers and other staff members who died during COVID-19 duty.
The COVID-19 pandemic which has ravaged the world has taken several lives across the country. In view of the same, Nagpur resident Sanjay Thul had sought details under the Right to Information (RTI) Act about the total number of deaths in the police force due to the coronavirus. He further enquired about the assistance provided by the government to the families of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the documents obtained by him stated that 370 Maharashtra police officers/staff members (excluding Mumbai) and 123 of Mumbai police died while on COVID-19 duty till September 14 this year.
On the other hand, earlier this year, the number of coronavirus cases were at an all-time high in the city of Mumbai and nearby areas. Despite the spread of COVID-19, officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) continued their duties and as per reports 228 employees of the corporation who worked day and night to curb the spread of the virus in Mumbai, lost their lives due to the infection.
With an aim to help their families, the BMC has decided to offer a helping hand and keeping the same in mind, the civic body has decided to provide financial assistance of INR 50 lakh to the families of 91 people who lost their lives. Moreover, the heirs of 90 people will also be given jobs at the BMC.
