On Tuesday, May 17, the Supreme Court (SC) asked the Maharashtra State Election Commission to hold civic as well as local body polls in those districts that have less rainfall, reports stated.

According to accounts, the SC remarked that the body does not need to wait till October or November. They reportedly added that polls in those districts with heavy rainfall can be conducted later.

Earlier the SEC had mentioned that it could finalise the date for elections to 14 municipal corporations including Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, amongst others by the end of July.

While areas such as Marathwada and Vidarbha witness limited rainfall, Mumbai and Konkan regions have considerable rains.

Recently, the SEC published the final list of Mumbai's ward boundaries for the 236 electoral wards. This comes after the SC asks it to notify the schedule for the local body polls in a span of two weeks

Prior to this, the SEC told the apex court that it would conduct the local body polls in two to three phases after the monsoon. It had added that the elections to the 20 municipal corporations in the state including that of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be held in September-October.

The pre-poll process, the SEC says takes two months to complete. The Maharashtra government had a few months ago amended the law to take SEC's power of forming wards. Owing to this, the BMC elections, amongst other local polls, were delayed.

The OBC reservation has been a bone of contention in the state elections. While the Maharashtra government wishes to enforce reservation for the community, the apex court is against the same. The two have been at loggerheads about the same.
