Following the Supreme Court's (SC) direction to the State Election Commission (SEC) to notify it of the elections of the local body elections in two weeks, the body is anticipated to commence the process in the next few days, reports stated. Earlier, accounts were doing rounds that the local body elections could be held in September-October.

According to narratives, the Maharashtra government looks to finish the collation of empirical data on the other backward classes (OBCs) in two months and go to the SC to restore the quota.

On Thursday, May 5, state chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray chaired a review meeting in light of the apex court's order. Based on reports, during the meeting, all options to enable OBC quota up to 27 per cent in elections were discussed.

Other than this, the Maharashtra government has urged the Jayant Banthia commission that has been appointed to collect empirical data, to adhere to the triple test criteria put in place by the SC. It has also asked it to promptly submit its report.

Similarly, accounts suggest that the state government decided not to go to the SC to review the decision because it believes it would not serve any purpose.

Vijay Wadettiwar, other backward classes welfare minister took to Twitter to say, "The law passed by the state government has not been overturned by the Supreme Court. The Mahavikas Alliance has a clear role to play in ensuring that the rights of OBCs are not compromised."

Moreover, prominent OBC Leader, Chhagan Bhujbal on Thursday conducted a press conference wherein he remarked, "Elections in Maharashtra cannot be held without OBC reservation, Mahavikas Aghadi is trying its best to save OBC reservation. The state government is firmly on the side of OBC reservation."

Bhujbal added, "Regarding the formation of wards by the State Government, the ordinance was removed. According to this ordinance, the power to form wards was taken over by the state government. The state government has also changed the number of corporators, making it difficult to hold elections now."
