On Wednesday, May 4, the Supreme Court ordered the Maharashtra state election commission (SEC) to proclaim the election programme of local bodies in two weeks

Following this announcement, a report by the Indian Express claims that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections with OBC reservations could happen in September-October.

According to the account, state chief minister Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting on Thursday, May 5, on the court order. The narrative speculates that senior ministers and concerned department secretaries could attend the meeting.

It has been reported the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the SEC to announce the schedule for Municipal and Zilla Parishad elections within two weeks.

However, the Maharashtra government had decided that elections would be held only after the OBC reservation was approved.

The SC made these statements while hearing petitions on the state’s local body polls, including one challenging the OBC quota and the state’s new law which permitted the government to take over the powers for delimitation and ward formation for local bodies from the SEC.

The SEC has highlighted that elections cannot be conducted during monsoon since it has logistical challenges. Earlier in March, a law was passed by the State Assembly which asked that the delimitation and ward formation for civic bodies be done afresh.
