The Bombay High Court has slammed Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) for illegally recruiting Tree Authority's officer. The HC has ordered the TMC to suspend the current tree authority official and appoint a new one.

What’s The Story?

Last December, Thane activist Rohit Joshi had filed a PIL in the HC against TMC's order to chop over 5,000 trees in Thane for development projects. The HC had then stayed the axing and deemed that the authority was illegally constituted. He had also mentioned that the tree authority should be dismissed for its illegal constitution and should revoke the TMC commissioner’s right of permitting to cut 25 trees.

Two months ago, during a hearing on the same case, the HC bench added that before cutting more than 24 trees, the TMC commissioner should take expert's advice.

Likewise, the HC has stated that Thane’s Tree Authority officer Kedar Patil recruitment is illegal and called for a report from Urban Development department. Accordingly, the Urban Development Department submitted its report stating that they had not appointed Patil as an officer for Tree Authority department. Hence, the HC ordered TMC to oust Kedar Patil, said activist Joshi.
