Shiv Sena proposed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the exclusion of non-vegetarian food in meals of TB in-patients. This proposal shocked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as earlier, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food used to be served by the BMC.

International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has been appointed to serve lunch and dinner to in-patients in Sion Hospital and Bhadurji Block. On the introduction of Shiv Sena’s proposal, NCP leader Rakhi Jadhav strongly opposed it and questioned ISKCON about the reason for the meat ban. She said just like other BMC hospitals offer eggs and other non-vegetarian items to TB in-patients, there should not be an exclusion of the same in Sion Hospital just because a religious organisation is in-charge of the food being served.

Standing along Jadhav’s lines, Samajwadi Party leader Rais Shaikh said non-vegetarian food is as nutritious as vegetarian food. He stressed on the importance of a balanced diet for TB patients and said that the patients should be left on their own choices to decide what type of food they prefer.
