Everyone knows that the state animal of Maharashtra is the fox and the state bird is the Green Pigeon. However, now a fish which has gained importance in the kitchen will get the status of state fish. The Maharashtra state government announced this on Monday. The deep sea-dwelling silvery pomfret fish will now be recognised as the state fish.

This announcement was made by Fisheries Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar. For the past several years there has been a demand to give official status of state fish to pomfret fish. Many fishermen associations had made demands to the Fisheries Minister in this regard.

The decline in silver pomfret production in the state is worrying. Therefore, fishermen organisations raised this demand to save this species. Knowing the importance of this fish species, the state government has also issued a postage stamp. Fishermen believe that giving the fish the status of an official state fish will help protect the habitat of this species.

The silver pomfret is locally known as paplet or saranga. Paplet is the most exported fish in the state. However, its production has been declining since the 1980s. That's why this fish is becoming rare. Also, the fish found in the sea in Palghar's Satpati has a different taste, due to which there is a lot of demand for the fish here.
