Solapur has replaced Jalgaon to become the district with the highest COVID-19 case fatality rate in Maharashtra at almost 7 per cent. The government and the local administration have been trying to contain the number of cases in the Solapur area, which is known for its textile units and bidi industry.

With the surge in the number of cases of coronavirus, Solapur witnessed a 43 per cent rise in deaths since July 1, 2020. However, one major concern amongst the authorities has been that the people living in Solapur have mostly been working in the textile and bidi industries. As a result of being exposed to toxic substances for a long period of time, the working class have been found to have pre-existing lung conditions which is a persistent problem, especially since the coronavirus affects the lungs of an individual.

As the epicentre has shifted from Mumbai, newer pockets have started emerging with five districts, namely, Ahmednagar, Latur, Parbhani, Washim and Wardha witnessing a 200 per cent jump in the cases of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Monday, July 20, clocked 8,240 fresh cases of the coronavirus which propelled the tally to 3,18,695 cases. On the other hand, the death toll in the state has crossed the 12,000-mark. On Monday, the state recorded 176 new deaths with the fatality toll reaching 12,030. According to the health department of the state, the number of recovered people has reached 1,75,029 whereas there are 1,31,334 active cases in the state. In light of the cases of coronavirus, the state government has extended the lockdown till July 31 to contain the spread of COVID-19. India has witnessed a record single-day jump of 40,425 cases of coronavirus, pushing its tally past the 11-lakh mark on Monday, while the total number of recoveries crossed 7 lakhs as per the data shared by the Union Health Ministry.
