On 29 September, prior to Dussehra, 23 people lost their lives due to the stampede which happened at the Elphinstone Road station. One of the youngest victims of the stampede was Mayuresh Haldankar, who was only 21 years old.

He belonged to a poor family and hence, owner of Aapla Mumbaikar Mangesh Ahivele, who is famous for selling vada pav for only INR 5, came forward and decided to lend one day’s income to Mayuresh Haldankar’s family. He started selling vada pav from 10:00 am and finished the day at around 8:00 pm. He earned a total sum of INR 5,000 from selling vada pav and by 8:30 pm, he will hand over the money to Haldankar’s.

When I met the family of Mayuresh Haldankar, I decided to help the family and I am happy that I was able to do it by giving days income. And I am thankful to Mumbaikars who helped in raising funds," said Mangesh Ahivele, Aapla Vadapav, Owner

Mayuresh Haldankar was the only earner of his family and when he left for heavenly abode, his family was shattered. He is survived by sick mother, a younger sister who is pursuing her education and old parents. They are in need of financial help.

We were devasted because of Elphinstone stampede and when we read about Aapla Vadapav’s generous attempt, I decided that I would do my bit by buying vada pav. So, my friend and I left Diva to visit the stall and we bought 50 vada pav for our office staff,” said Vikram Telang, buyer

Railways declared that they would provide INR 5 lakhs to the victims but Haldankar family has still not got the funds. Aapla Vadapav owner, Mangesh Ahivele felt the need to help the family and hence he decided to give his one-day income to his family.

We came specially from Sion to help Haldankar family. We always eat and buy vada pav, but, today we felt good that we bought vada pav for a better reason. We never thought that we could help someone by buying vada pav," said Juilie Ambre, buyer
