On Monday, December 14, which was the first day of Maharashtra Assembly’s winter session, the Maratha group and oppositions staged protest demanding a stay on government recruitments until the case for the reservation for Maratha community in Supreme Court was resolved.

Students from the Maratha Kranti Morcha sat on a dharna at Azad Maidan and later near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. They were rounded up by the police and not allowed to proceed to the Vidhan Bhavan.

The Dharna Andolan was organised to demand immediate appointment of 2,125 candidates and other candidates who have completed the selection process in the government department. Considering the possibility of a large number of youths coming from Nashik for this, agitators had started arriving from all over the state since Sunday, December 13.

However, special checking was being carried out at toll plazas in Mulund and Vashi to prevent any irregularities in the background of the agitation. The identity cards of the suspects were being checked. Apart from this, special security was also maintained in the CST area. For this, additional force of more than 200 officers and employees were appointed.

The area was earlier inspected by a bomb squad to prevent any untoward incidents. Assistant Commissioner of Police Milind Khetle, he was present at the spot along with a number of senior officials had reached the spot and inspected the security systems. Most of the participants in the march were from Nashik. In addition, two other rallies were held there.

Earlier, BJP legislators sat on the steps of Vidhan Bhavan and shouted slogans against the state government for its failure to restore the Maratha reservation. Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis claimed that the government was not serious and it was running away from the issue.
