On Monday, November 29, the standing committee members raised objections against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) decision to scrap the project of constructing toilet seats in slum areas. The chairman of the standing committee Yashwant Jadhav has directed BMC to give them a report as to why the project has been scrapped.

The project was sanctioned in January 2019, where the civic body had to build 22,774 toilet seats within a year; however, even after three years, only 56% of toilets are built.

Ravi Raja, leader of the opposition, while discussing the proposal, raised the issue. He said the project was introduced after a detailed survey and discussion with corporators.

The civic body started working on the project after the standing committee's approval but scrapped it without informing them. He further said that this move did not only defame the committee but is also a setback for the people for whom the project was meant.

Group leader of the Samajwadi Party, Rais Shaikh, said that the project was meant to benefit people and was scrapped without informing the standing committee.

For those unversed, last week, BMC had scrapped its project of increasing toilet seats of community toilets by 50% in slums.
