According to sources, the Maharashtra government has decided to consider a waiver in power bills.

This comes after the people in the state received inflated power bills for the months of April, May and June. As a result of the coronavirus-induced lockdown, the state is planning to bear the surplus burden that the power companies have recorded during these months.

This move is set to bring relief to several power consumers who have been registering complaints of exorbitant bills in the past. The state government is also said to address complaints of high power bills of prominent personalities, industrialists and celebrities in the state.

Moreover, the state government is considering dividing the waiver into three slabs based on power consumption by each household. It is to bear the entire excess cost if the usage mentioned in the bill for these months is up to 100 units in excess to the usage of the corresponding period last year. For 101-300 units, it has proposed to waive 75 per cent of the excess and 50 per cent up to 500 units, as per a report in Hindustan Times.

In the past, several consumers, from middle-class citizens to Bollywood celebrities, of Tata Power, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML), the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking, and the State-run Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL), had demanded an answer for the hike in power bills. In some cases, the bills were more than ₹10,000.
