On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered all the high courts to make sure that cases of child sexual assault are fast-tracked and decided by special courts. Recently, Bombay High Court has also been seen emphasizing the necessity of speedy and timely completion of investigations in such cases.

The purpose of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was to provide effectiveness and speediness to sexual harassment cases of children but the statistics display a troublesome truth.

The data compiled by Law Ministry displays that the pendency of such cases is increasing.

As per statistics, Maharashtra has the worst figures with almost 17,300 POCSO cases pending trial, UP has 15,900 and Madhya Pradesh as many as 10,950 cases. Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Gujarat have around 3,500 to 5,000 cases pending.

Bombay High Court had recently displayed its concern over the slow pace of police investigation in POCSO cases. Last week, the court had suggested setting up of a special police unit to investigate cases of sexual assault against women and minors on an urgent basis.
