Since the past week, Mumbai has witnessed heavy rains which have resulted in waterlogging in some areas, disrupting public life. However, amid this, even the catchment areas that supply water to the city has also been receiving significant rainfall. Locals can thus keep their fingers crossed and expect a solution to their water crisis.
In regards to rainfall at the catchment areas, some residents living near lakes have been evacuated as some of the water bodies are filling up, state narratives.
Reports claim that it has been raining in the catchment areas of Tansa Dam in the Thane district that supplies water to Mumbai. Expecting that the dam may overflow soon that may cause a flood, the civic authorities have issued a warning to 33 villages in the Thane and Palghar areas, on the banks of the Tansa river. They have also urged the public not to tread into the river basin in this weather.
According to certain reports, the present level of the Tansa dam is 125.55 MTHD while the overflow mark is 128.63 MTHD. Considering that it has been regularly raining in the area, the dam is anticipated to fill up soon. Therefore, 18 villages from Thane and 15 villages from Palghar have been alerted, stated an official.
As reported by the PTI, Santosh Kadam, chief of Thane's Regional Disaster Management Cell said, “A total of 18 villages from Thane and 15 in Palghar have been put on alert. These areas are in Sahapur, Bhiwandi, Wada and Vasai talukas. The present level of the Tansa Dam is 125.55 MTHD while the overflow mark is 128.63 MTHD. We have been told by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which owns the dam, to intimate villagers,".
