A day after deadly fire that broke out in a 20-storey residential building in south Mumbai, four-member committee was formed to probe on Sunday, January 23. On the same day, the committee began its inquiry as eight of the injured remained in critical condition, officials familiar with the matter said.

The inquiry will look into three aspects: cause of fire, reasons for the spread of the fire, and illegal addition or alteration in the building, if any.

Meanwhile, the committee has been asked to submit a report within 15 days to ascertain the cause of the fire, reasons for the spread of fire and any illegal construction in the building.

Moreover, it has also come to light that the residents of the building are unlikely to be allowed to occupy their flats for at least a week.

After the incident was reported, the fire brigade officials asked the residents to vacated the building due to level three fire that killed seven and injured several people.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) officials said that almost the entire electrical wiring of the building was destroyed in the fire, and it will take time to restore them.

Officials further stated that it will take around five to ten days to allow residents to go back and stay in the building. Currently, there is a lot of dust and it may cause harm to the residents if they are allowed to occupy the flats. Hence, no one is allowed to enter the building for now. Residents of 120 flats in the 20-storey building have been advised to stay away as severe dust and smoke still lingers on the upper floors of the building, which is hazardous.

However, they have allowed residents up to 10 floors to enter the building and take their belongings.

It took five hours, 13 fire tenders and seven water tankers to douse the flames, which was reported around 7.30 am on Saturday, January 22.
