In recent developments, the Shiv Sena is all geared up to restore the tax waiver granted in the year 1996 to the musical concert that was held in the same year, featuring the legendary Michael Jackson.

This concert was conceptualized by then Shiv Udyog Sena (SUS) chief and current Maharashtra Navnirman Sena head Raj Thackeray. As per reports, the Shiv Sena government in the state back then had exempted the concert from paying entertainment duty in 1996 itself, a division bench of the Bombay High Court had set aside the old order for “non-application of mind” while remanding the matter back to the government.

However, over 24 years later, with the party spearheading the government once again, the state government has decided to restore the waiver. According to sources, a proposal to this effect will be taken up during the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, January 6.

Michael Jackson or the “King of Pop” not only influenced people in the West but inspired legions of musicians and dancers in India too. Several Indian actors and choreographers have also paid homage to Jackson often, by imitating his trademark moves that include the pelvic thrust, the sideways glide, and the iconic moonwalk.

Back in 1996, after shaking a leg with the crowd, Jackson had left for his hotel (the Oberoi Hotel at Nariman Point) in a 30-car motorcade. On the way, he popped out of his Toyota’s sunroof to greet the crowds. Moreover, at Dharavi, he stopped, got off, and walked into the colony to greet its overwhelmed residents.
