The Bharatiya Janata Party’s youth wing has objected to the practice of making Ganesh idols in the likeness of film characters, celebrities and other popular figures, warning idol makers and sellers against displaying or selling such idols during the upcoming Ganesh festival.

The BJP Yuva Morcha said Ganesh idols should not be altered in ways that, according to the organisation, could hurt religious sentiments. It argued that while artistic experimentation is common during the festival, the depiction of Lord Ganesha as movie characters or well-known personalities amounts to disrespecting a figure of religious significance.

The organisation has appealed to idol makers and vendors across Thane district not to sell such idols. It said that if idols it considers “distorted” are found at stalls, they should be removed and returned or respectfully immersed.

BJP Yuva Morcha representatives further warned that if such idols are found at stalls in Thane district, their members would visit the locations and immerse the idols themselves.

The group also questioned whether responsibility for such representations lies with the sculptors who make the idols or with buyers who choose them, while urging artists to keep religious sentiments in mind when designing Ganesh idols.
