The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has passed a resolution to waive the property tax of houses measuring up to 500 square feet in the city limits.

This came ahead of the civic elections due early next year in the general body meeting of the civic body held on Thursday, November 19, where the members were present in-person. The meeting was conducted under the leadership of the Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske.

It will come into force only after the resolution gets an approval from the Maharashtra government.

The mayor termed the move as "historic", as it will be beneficial to the citizens. While BJP leader Manohar Dhumbre dubbed it as a "poll gimmick" as the civic elections just a few months away.

“In the election, we had promised all Thanekars that we would waive the tax on 500 square feet house. We were going to make a decision earlier. But due to the corona of the corporation, the financial situation had deteriorated. Due to declining revenue and rising coronavirus cases, we could not make that decision immediately one to one and a half years ago. But today we have passed this resolution in the House,” said Mayor Naresh Mhaske.

During the meeting, the mayor also ordered the TMC administration to maintain a database of all the civic properties and ensure that none of them are grabbed by private persons.

Civic body elections in Thane are due in February-March next year.
