The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has registered a case of theft against unknown person in local police stations for stealing manhole cover on the drainage pipes.

As per accounts, manhole covers of sewages in Mumbai's Andheri, Vile Parle, Jogeshwari area have been stolen. Moreover, it has come to light that theft reports of manhole covers on sewers are on the rise.

The BMC in its reports stated that about 20 to 25 covers have been stolen and their value is estimated at INR 2.5 to 3 lakhs.

In the western suburbs, under K/East division of the municipality, a network of drainage canals has been set up in Andheri (East), Vile Parle (East) and Jogeshwari (East) areas. It has been observed that 20-25 lids have been stolen from these areas. Manholes and lids are fitted at regular intervals to the ducts for cleanliness and regular inspection. During monsoon, these manholes are left partly open by the civic officials so that rain water can recede smoothly without causing water-logging.

Since each duct is 15 to 25 feet deep, the manhole cover is made of iron and strong to ensure good safety. A lid costs around INR 12,000. As the number of thefts increased, CCTV footage of the area was obtained and a case was registered at Andheri MIDC and Sahar Police Station.
