The Urban Development Department has decided to introduce a new policy within a month for thousands of buildings in Mumbai that have been labeled as unauthorized buildings due to lack of occupancy certificates (OCs) for the past few years. Therefore, these buildings will get the opportunity to obtain occupancy certificates, informed Ashish Shelar, Guardian Minister of the Suburban District.
Millions of Mumbaikars, despite living in their own homes for many years, are legally living as non-residents because their buildings do not have occupancy permits. This problem has arisen due to loopholes in the rules or mistakes by developers, and is affecting more than 25,000 buildings in the city.
In a meeting chaired by Shelar on this very important issue for Mumbaikars, it was decided to introduce a policy to issue occupancy certificates to buildings without occupancy certificates before October 2. Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Urban Development Department, Revenue Department, and Cooperation Department were present at the meeting.

According to Shinde, over 25,000 buildings constructed as per the Development Control Regulations of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as well as the rules of MHADA, SRA, and other authorities but which have not received OC due to various reasons will benefit from this policy.
