Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reportedly decided to construct 490 new roads in 2022.

The BMC has about 2,055 km of roads under its jurisdiction. Due to the increasing number of potholes in the roads during the monsoons, the tendency of the municipality to make all the roads of cement concrete has been increasing for the last few years. Moreover, more than 100 km of roads are concreted every year.

In addition, repair work will be carried out in some areas for which tenders are being invited in phases. Meanwhile, the work on new roads is to start from October 1. In the Development Plan 2034, more emphasis has been laid on cement concreting roads in view of torrential rains and increasing traffic in Mumbai. Accordingly, the municipality has planned to build roads.

Meanwhile, in the budget of the corporation for the year 2021-22, a provision of INR 1,800 crores has been allocated for road works. Accordingly, tenders worth INR 1,200 crores have been issued for road construction from March to August this year. This includes tenders worth INR 100 crores in June and July. This year, 157 km of road works are proposed, including 145 cement concrete and 12 km of asphalt roads.
