With the continual downpour in Mumbai, monsoon-related diseases have reportedly increased by 50 per cent in the city.

In view of the situation, doctors have warned the people living across the island city against self-medication as it can delay diagnosis amongst patients who are suffering from the coronavirus.

According to data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), till July 18, 240 cases of malaria, 17 cases of leptospirosis, 10 and 13 swine flu cases have been reported in the city.

Meanwhile, Wockhardt Hospital at Mumbai Central has already recorded two cases of leptospirosis – a bacterial disease that causes serious illness, leading to jaundice-reduced platelets, multi-organ failure and death.

Earlier on June 10, the BMC had authorized an advisory on leptospirosis (a bacterial disease) amidst heavy rainfall in Mumbai.

Moreover, people are more likely to get infected by this bacterial disease if they travel and walk through waterlogged roads across the city without wearing gumboots. In addition, this disease spreads through the urine of infected animals. Individuals, exposed to such waters, are more likely to be infected with leptospirosis.

Therefore, the BMC asked the citizens living in Mumbai and the adjoining areas to be cautious of the same and to wear appropriate gumboots, especially in the case of a foot injury.
