Even though the state government has repeatedly urged the citizens to wear face masks and follow the protocols of social distancing, people have been found flouting these rules over the months.

As a consequence, the Thane Municipal Corporation has taken action against such citizens by imposing a fine of ₹500 on at least 1,900 individuals. As of now, the total fine collected by the Corporation has been ₹9,00,000.

Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma had earlier ordered the officials to undertake punitive action against citizens who do not wear masks in public places, government offices, private offices and markets in the Thane municipal limits. The same has been conveyed to the Assistant Commissioner and the Police. Moreover, the highest number of unmasked people were found in Naupada Ward Committee whereas the lowest number of action was taken in the Wagle Ward Committee.
