In a latest development, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde issued a directive to the Mumbai police commissioner on Wednesday, May 17, to not put any traffic constable above the age of 55 on duty on the city’s roads.

This development came after Shinde saw some senior constables on duty in the noonday sun as he drove to Mumbai from Thane earlier in the day. He immediately called Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar and gave him necessary instructions.

Moreover, this statement came at a time when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned about the heat wave for the next five days as there is a gradual rise in temperature in Mumbai and Maharashtra. Besides, this year the number of heat stroke patients has also increased more than twice as compared to last year.

The chief minister also said that traffic constables suffering from serious ailments should not be put on duty on roads.

Further, proper arrangements should be made for shade and water for the constables deployed on roads. Additional funds will be made available from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund if required, he added.

It is pertinent to note that few days ago, as the scorching heat continues to rise, the traffic department of Mumbai police had decided not to put those constables on duty who are above 55 years of age from 12 pm to 5 pm.
