Western Railway (WR) has launched 15-coaches local train service for the first time on the Virar-Dahanu road section. Two new 15-coach rakes have arrived at the Virar car shed. It plans a total of 17 15-car services on Virar-Dahanu route.
The decision comes as the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) expands northwards, as an increasing number of office workers are migrating to Dahanu and commuting to the city daily.
The move is aimed at reducing overcrowding and increasing carrying capacity on some of the busiest routes.
Of the total, eight trains will run on the newly upgraded Virar-Dahanu route.
According to senior railway officials, nine existing 12-coach trains on Churchgate-Virar corridor will be converted into 15-coach trains.
The infrastructure required to support these long trains has been completed in a record four months.
Under the Virar-Dahanu road four-laning project, MRVC has increased the width of platforms 3A and 4A at Virar station from 6.5 metres to 10.5 metres.
In addition to the widening and expansion of the existing platforms, a new home platform, 5A, has been constructed on the western side of the station.
