A significant progress has been made under the Virar-Dahanu Road (VR-DRD) railway line quadrupling project in Mumbai.

Western Railway (WR) and Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) upgraded platforms 3A and 4A have been widened from 6.5 metre to 10.5 metre and extended to handle 15-coach local trains, replacing the earlier 12-coach capacity.

According to an official statement, the works have been completed in a record time of four months, demonstrating efficient execution despite operational constraints at one of the busiest suburban stations on the western corridor.

In addition, a new platform 5A has been constructed on the western side of the station. This will enable it to handle the increasing passenger load and make the scheduling of trains smoother.

A successful trial of an EMU train was conducted on April 5. The improved platform will soon be handed over to the railways, paving the way for the introduction of 15-coach local services.

These developments will significantly enhance carrying capacity, improve passenger convenience, and support the growing commuter demand on the Western suburban corridor.

As a result, thousands of commuters who travel daily will get relief and travel will be more convenient. The quadrupling of the Virar-Dahanu Road route is considered an important part of the long-term plan to strengthen the suburban rail network in the extended metropolitan area of Mumbai.

MRVC CMD Vilas Wadekar said that these works are being completed safely and in a manner that causes a minimum disruption to passenger services in coordination with WR.
