The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is poised for a major mobility breakthrough with the Maharashtra Government approving the Uttan–Virar Sea Link and its extension to Vadhavan Port, paving the way for a 120-km, fully access-controlled coastal expressway. The project, known as the Mumbai–Vadhavan Expressway Corridor (MVEC), is expected to significantly reshape the region’s transport, economic and urban landscape.
Once completed, the corridor will connect South Mumbai to Vasai, Virar, Palghar and the upcoming Vadhavan Port, set to become India’s largest deep-sea port. This direct, high-speed coastal network will integrate multiple expressways, coastal roads and future national freight corridors, offering seamless mobility for both people and industry.
At the heart of the project is the 24.35-km Uttan–Virar Sea Link, which will become India’s longest sea bridge. The corridor includes over 30 km of connectors, six-lane elevated stretches, emergency lanes, navigational spans and a full Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to enable safe and efficient travel.
The MVEC is set to deliver large-scale benefits across sectors:
Significantly ease congestion on the Western Express Highway (WEH), SV Road and Link Road
Reduce travel time between South Mumbai and far northern suburbs
Lower vehicular emissions through faster, smoother traffic flow
Boost affordable housing, tourism and port-led economic activity
Create thousands of jobs in construction, logistics and allied industries
The project will also unlock vast land parcels along the Uttan–Bhayandar, Vasai and Virar belt, enabling new urban growth, infrastructure investment and opportunities for local communities. With the proposal now recommended to the Government of India, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set to enter a new era of coastal connectivity, high-speed mobility and integrated regional development.
