With the population of Vasai-Virar growing rapidly, traffic congestion in the region has become a major concern. In a significant move to improve connectivity, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has advanced plans for Metro Route 13, which will connect Mira-Bhayandar to Vasai-Virar.
MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee has submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the proposed metro corridor, along with cabinet remarks, to the state government for approval.
Once approved and completed, the project is expected to reduce travel time between Vasai-Virar and Mumbai, while also saving fuel and easing pressure on road transport.
Long-Pending Demand Finally Gains Momentum
The metro project is being seen as a major breakthrough after years of continuous follow-up by Bahujan Vikas Aghadi President and former MLA Hitendra Thakur.
Former MLAs Hitendra Thakur, Kshitij Thakur, and Rajesh Patil had consistently pursued the government to bring metro connectivity to the Vasai-Virar region.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), appointed as the consultant for the project, prepared and submitted the DPR for Metro Route 13. The proposal has already been approved in the MMRDA authority meeting.
Key Features of Metro Route 13:According to the DPR, Metro Route 13 will cover a total distance of 25.03 km.
- Underground section: 3.25 km
- Elevated section: 21.78 km
- Total proposed stations: 16
A metro depot for maintenance and repair work is also planned at Chikhaldongri in Virar.
Direct Connectivity to Existing Metro Lines
Metro Route 13 will be directly connected to Metro Route 9, which runs between Dahisar and Mira-Bhayandar.
This integration will further connect commuters to Metro Lines 7 and 7A, making travel to different parts of Mumbai smoother and faster.
The project is expected to greatly improve access to:
-
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
-
Andheri
-
Western suburbs of Mumbai
Metro and Six-Lane Bridge Planned Over Vasai Creek
Authorities are also planning a combined bridge carrying both the metro corridor and a six-lane road over Vasai Creek.
The proposed infrastructure is expected to strengthen transport connectivity between Mumbai and the fast-growing Vasai-Virar region.
Benefits for Citizens
Officials believe the metro project will provide several long-term benefits, including:
-
Reduced traffic congestion
-
Shorter travel time
-
Savings in fuel consumption
-
Lower road accident rates
-
Reduction in noise pollution
-
Improved air quality
The project is expected to significantly improve daily commuting for lakhs of residents in Vasai-Virar.
Part of MMRDA’s Larger Metro Expansion Plan
To strengthen public transport across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the MMRDA has planned 14 metro routes covering a total length of 350.96 km.
While several metro corridors have already become operational for passengers, work on the remaining routes is currently underway.
