With the farmers across the country calling for a strike on Tuesday, December 8, in order to protest against the Centre’s agricultural laws, several markets and businesses suffered financial losses.

As a result, prices of vegetables rose sharply in several major markets on Wednesday, December 9. According to sources, vegetable prices have gone up by 10 per cent due to the Bharat Bandh.

Moreover, the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) remained closed in many parts of Maharashtra on Tuesday in support of the Bharat Bandh called by agitating farmer unions to press for repeal of the Centre's agricultural laws. As per reports, wholesale markets in major cities like Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Aurangabad remained shut. Retail shops also downed shutters in many cities.

APMCs at Kalyan and Vashi in Navi Mumbai, which supplies the bulk of vegetables and fruits to the city, remained closed, with wholesalers and traders supporting the agitation.

Currently, the price of onion in Sindhudurg is ₹45 per kg, while the BJP sold it at ₹30 per kg. According to sources, it was learned that the sale was done with the help of MP Narayan Rane, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Back in November, the vegetable prices had come down in the APMC markets in Navi Mumbai with cabbage is being sold at ₹10, cilantro at ₹6, cucumber at ₹6, tomato at ₹15 and milk at ₹12 per kg.
