Like every year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to issue notices on dangerous buildings in the face of monsoon. A total of 216 buildings are standing in a very dangerous condition in Mumbai, and the BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has ordered to cut off water supply to these buildings.


Monsoon is approaching and the BMC administration is busy with pre-monsoon activities. The commissioner had recently called a review meeting to review the pre-monsoon works. At that time, the Commissioner gave the above instructions regarding the dangerous building.


At this time, the Commissioner advised to vacate the dangerous buildings of 'C1' category. The commissioner instructed the concerned authorities to issue eviction notices to the residents of dangerous buildings and to make alternative arrangements for them. He also directed to cut off water supply to dangerous buildings as per the order of the High Court.

On behalf of the BMC, various works and measures are taken every year before monsoon. Along with desilting of drains, road repairs, residential houses and non-residential places in the Mumbai metropolis are inspected to determine their hazardous and extra-hazardous categories. All private and municipally owned buildings in the city and suburbs are surveyed. Buildings that require immediate demolition due to becoming extremely dangerous are included in the 'C-1' category.


Five years ago there were as many as 619 hazardous buildings in Mumbai. Since then this number has started decreasing every year. Some of the dangerous buildings have been demolished, while others have been vacated. A survey of residential and non-residential buildings in Mumbai was recently conducted this year. After inspection, it has been found that 216 buildings in 'C-1' category are in very dangerous condition in Mumbai.


According to the policy of the civic body, structural inspection of buildings older than 30 years is carried out. A 354 notice is issued to vacate houses in buildings found to be dangerous during structural inspection.

How many buildings are dangerous

A total of 216 buildings are standing in very dangerous condition in Mumbai. Most of these 114 buildings are in the western suburbs. It includes 36 buildings in the city and 66 buildings in the eastern suburbs. Out of 216 buildings, cases related to 110 buildings are in court. Whereas the cases of 9 buildings are with the Technical Advisory Committee. Therefore, action will be taken by the Encroachment Removal Department to vacate and demolish the remaining 97 buildings before the monsoons, officials said.
