In a bid to curb circulation of banned items in jail, on Thursday, March 12, State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh stated that the government will now install CCTV cameras in the prison especially in the blind spots. This move comes after Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWP) legislator Jayant Patil stated that when he was in Yerwada jail for a month he saw prisoners circulating banned items inside the jail including mobile phones, alcohol, drugs, food items etc. Moreover, he stated that he had found a phone with four spare batteries in the toilet.

During the question hour in the legislative assembly, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh responded to Jayant Patil and said this practice will stop within six months as soon as the CCTV Cameras will be installed.

On Wednesday, the State Government's Prison Department issued an advisory to all prisons to take precautionary measures in the wake of the spread of Coronavirus.

The advisory circulated to all jail superintendents on Wednesday, March 11 directs authorities to put up printouts of “dos and don’ts” inside jails. Those in charge of the barracks and prison officers have been directed to keep a watch on inmates who show any symptom or COVID-19. It has further been advised that these inmates should be kept in isolation until medical authorities are informed.

Earlier this month, Anil Deshmukh stated that no detention centre is coming up in Maharashtra in connection with the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). He had even urged the protestors who were protesting against CAA and NRC to take back their protest.
