Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases are increasing across Mumbai and other districts in Maharashtra. Over the last few days, the data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shows a spike in COVID-19 patients, and it is being said that the number has once again increased significantly in Worli Koliwada, which was one of the hotspots last year during the first COVID-19 wave.

Reports state that as many as 197 people have been infected with the coronavirus and the cases growing around Koliwada, Worli, and the nearby areas have raised concerns for the government. Observing the same, Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray who heads the constituency, has once again called the officials for a discussion.

Of the 197 cases,  97 have been reported from Koliwada in Worli, 21 from Janata Colony and 69 from Adarshnagar, and experts believe that the rise if also due to the dense population of area of Worli, where the management of COVID-19 needs be stricter. Keeping this in mind, the local corporator, Hemagi Worlikar, has appealed to the citizens to follow the rules diligently, as many have been observed flouting the same.

In 2020, when the COVID-19 cases increased in Mumbai, officials from the civic body feared the spread in Worli Koliwada, and to implement a strict protocol, citizens from the area were instructed not to leave the locality for over two months, which eventually helped the administration, manage the crisis effectively. Similar plan is being discussed currently.

The ongoing second wave of coronavirus spread is not easy to manage, as several parts of the country, are facing the brunt, with poor infrastructure and healthcare facilities.

Maharashtra is one of the worst affected states in India, and with an aim to contain the spread, CM Uddhav Thackeray, on April 13, 2021, announced a state-wide curfew which was implemented from April 14, 2021, and will continue for 15 days until May 1, 2021. Strict restrictions have been imposed whereby only essential services are allowed to operate between 7am to 8pm.
