Western Railway (WR) has announced their plan to add approximately 50 more air-conditioned Mumbai local trains.

At present, WR operates 96 air-conditioned trains on seven rakes. By March 2024, five more AC rakes are expected to join the fleet. The arrival of these rakes will enable WR to enhance its air-conditioned local services.

The goal is to keep up with the increasing demands from commuters. With the increase in air-conditioned local routes, passengers can expect greater schedule flexibility and enhanced comfort on their daily journeys.

In November of the previous year, seventeen new train services were started. As a result, the total number of AC trains increased from 79 to 96.

In addition to the new AC rakes, WR is also considering extending all platforms across Mumbai. This also includes the slow corridors towards Churchgate. This will allow the platforms to accommodate 15-car local trains.

Currently, only certain stops on the fast route between Churchgate and Andheri can handle trains with fifteen cars. However, every station past Andheri is capable of managing the extra distance.

The authority is currently looking at the feasibility of the platform extension project until Churchgate. Further action will be taken upon the completion of the feasibility study. The aim is to increase the capacity of 12-car local trains to 15 cars to boost carrying capacity.

As of now, 199 of the 1,394 local services have 15 coaches operating them. 24 of those 199 begin and conclude at Churchgate, 26 at Dadar, and the remainder travel the Andheri-Virar stretch.
