Two years into the novel coronavirus striking havoc in Mumbai, on Thursday, February 10, there were no active sealed buildings or containment zones in the city, highlighted the data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

According to reports, slum pockets freed themselves from the shackles in mid-January. The civic body had commenced declaring slums as containment zones and sealed buildings in May 2020. It has been alleged that at a point, over 50 per cent of Mumbai’s population was in containment zones and were surveilled by the Mumbai Police and the BMC.

It has been reported that in the second wave the slum population didn’t face many woes over containment zones, but many buildings were sealed. In the third wave too, driven by the Omicron variant floors on buildings were sealed.

Earlier on Wednesday, February 9, there was only one active sealed building in Mumbai. This building was in the M/E ward that comprises the Govandi area. However, on the same day, there were no active containment zones in the city.

Based on the statistics released by the civic authority 429 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Thursday. With this, there are 3,698 active coronavirus patients in the Greater Mumbai Region. Similarly, two fatalities were reported owing to the virus all of whom had comorbidities and were over the age of 60.
