In the backdrop of the latest variant of coronavirus, Omicron, the Mumbai Police has issued a stay order within its limits under section 144 till February 28.

To ensure strict implementation of the measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection, these orders have been issued under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).

The order states that violators of the protocols will be prosecuted under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

This comes at a time when the COVID-19 cases have seen a significant drop in the city and state. Moreover, despite a drop in the fresh Omicron cases has been reported in Mumbai, it has come to light that a total of 3,455 infection have been detected so far after Maharashtra added 121 on Thursday, February 10. Of them, 2,191 patients have been discharged so far.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar while interacting with reporters had elucidated that Mumbai will be unlocked by the end of February but it will be important for the people to wear masks as well as observe social distancing.

However, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope as well as Aaditya Thackeray, environment minister both stated that masks will continue to stay. Thackeray had mentioned that wearing these face masks will continue to remain mandatory until the WHO tells the global citizens that the pandemic or endemic has ended.
