On Wednesday, February 9, Maharashtra cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray while interacting with media persons at Dadar’s Shivaji Park stated that 100 per cent restrictions in Mumbai will be eased when COVID-19 will not have a presence amongst the citizens.

His statements contradict those of Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar who on Tuesday, February 8, expressed that Mumbai will be unlocked by the end of February. She added that the authorities have made up their minds, but it is important for the people to wear masks as well as observe social distancing.

He added that many restrictions have already been eased in the city and the authorities are carefully treading forward. Thackeray remarked that schools, colleges and offices are now open. He further mentioned that restrictions on the timings of restaurants have also been removed.

While speaking about face masks, he said that wearing these masks will continue to remain mandatory until the WHO tells the global citizens that the pandemic or endemic has ended. He further elucidated that the pandemic has not changed into an endemic, with the pandemic still underway.

Additionally, he shared his thoughts about the third wave driven by the highly transmissible variant of coronavirus, Omicron. He spoke about how one saw that the case numbers during that stage reached nearly 30,000. Moreover, junior Thackeray still believes that COVID-19 is still amongst us, thus it won’t be apt to assume that pandemic is over. Therefore, he is of the opinion that the way forward is to be careful.
