Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad locked horns in the concluding encounter of Vivo IPL 2018. Earlier, when these two had faced each other in the Qualifier One of Vivo IPL, Super Kings had defeated them and fixed their place in the finals. Similar to the Qualifier One, Chennai Super Kings won the toss and put Sunrisers to bat first.

Sunrisers’ batsmen played sensibly and kept building crucial partnerships. Williamson’s 47 off 36 deliveries and Yusuf Pathan’s quick 45 off 25 balls proved decisive for the team’s total. Braithwaite’s cameo of 21 off 11 deliveries powered Sunrisers to 178 runs. Considering the stage, i.e. the finals, the target provided Sunrisers with a mental advantage as their strength laid in their bowlers.

Super Kings had to chase 179 in order to emerge as Vivo IPL champions for the third time.

Super Kings lost their first wicket in the fourth over when the Man of the Match (MoM) of the Qualifier One, Faf Du Plessis succumbed to a slower delivery. But, Shane Watson and Suresh Raina looked firm and built the match-winning partnership for Super Kings.

Runs flowed off Watson’s bat as he scored a half-century in just 33 deliveries. On the other hand, Raina ensured to assist Watson and played the supporting role efficiently. The duo brought up a 100-run stand in just 52 balls. Watson seemed unstoppable after he hit Sandeep Sharma 27 runs in the 13th over consisting of three consecutive sixes.

After which, Watson scored his second century of the season in just 51 deliveries. He remained unbeaten with 117 runs and won the game for Super Kings with 1.3 overs to spare.

This is Chennai’s third IPL trophy and they have equaled the record of the most successful team in Indian Premier League along with Mumbai Indians. Earlier, the Super Kings had won two consecutive seasons in 2010 and 2011.

Fun Fact: This is the first time an IPL final has been held at Wankhede Stadium.
