Selectors add 7 players for Mumbai senior team’s off-season fitness camp

While chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that they’ve picked the squad according to the need, Parsee Gymkhana cricket secretary and vice-president Khodadad Yazdegardi alleged that the selectors weren’t picking deserving players as they hadn’t local matches.

Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is one of the country’s prominent hubs for cricket. Several players have started their journey from representing Mumbai initially and later playing for the national side. Recently, MCA selectors added seven new players into the senior team’s off-season fitness camp after deciding upon the same last week.

Shubham Ranjane, Shashank Singh, Ankit Soni, Alpesh Ramjani, Parikshit Valsingkar, Prasad Pawar and Aditya Dhumal will join the 27 players who are at present, training for the upcoming domestic season. Earlier, these players were ousted despite an impactful performance in the local cricket. Ranjane had scored almost 2,000 runs in domestic cricket but still wasn’t selected initially in the squad along with other good performers, which raised a lot of brows.

However, the chief selector Ajit Agarkar dispersed the rumours that the new addition came in response to Parsee Gymkhana cricket secretary and vice-president Khodadad Yazdegardi’s meeting with the Committee of Administrators asking them to call for a Special General Meeting for the removal of selectors. He had accused the selection committee of not picking deserving players as they weren’t watching the domestic matches.

Agarkar stated that they had picked players according to the MCA’s needs. He added that these players were added since the domestic one-dayers have scheduled earlier.

However, Yazdegardi hasn’t been convinced by the decision and still is adamant on the removal of selectors as he has signatures from 39 members (30 is required) to call the SGM and remove the selectors. He can convene the meeting himself if the CoA does not conduct it by three weeks after the submission of his letter, i.e. August 20.

On the other hand, the selectors will meet on Tuesday to decide about the team’s preparations for the season.
