As India began their ODI campaign against New Zealand at Hamilton's Seddon Park on Wednesday, Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw made his ODI debut. After handing the hosts a clean sweep in the T20I series, the Indian side entered the field without their regular ODI openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan.

The Indian ODI vice-captain, Sharma was ruled out of the remainder of the New Zealand tour after he suffered a calf injury. The injury would be blow to the Indian side as well as Sharma himslef, given how good his form has been in white-ball cricket.

Interestingly, as one Mumbai batsman (Rohit Sharma) was ousted from the ODI side, another Mumbai player (Prithvi Shaw) made his entry in the squad. Along with Shaw, Karnataka batsman Mayank Agarwal made his ODI debut as he was named as Sharma's replacement. Meanwhile, Shaw was dismissed after he scored a paltry 20 runs.

Opening the innings for India, Shaw and Agarwal became the 4th time a pair of Indian openers to have made their debut in the same match. Previously, KL Rahul and Karun Nair made their ODI debut in the same match in Zimbabwe in June 2016.

As Shaw makes his ODI debut, he will also make comeback in the Test side for India. This comes after Shaw had played two Tests before he was handed ban for doping violation last year.

"Two debutants, both at the top, Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal make their ODI debuts, pretty exciting times for them. The five guys that are not playing Pandey, Pant, Dube, Saini and Chahal," Virat Kohli said.

Test Squad: Virat Kohli (Captain), Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper), Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Mohd. Shami, Navdeep Saini, Ishant Sharma (subject to fitness clearance).
