While MI won the toss and choose to bowl, RR's Joss Buttler who scored 67 in 52 balls helped his team put a 158/6 on the scoreboard. On the other hand, Ravichandra Ashwin from the Royals smashed a 9 ball 21. From the MI camp, it was Riley Meredith who took two wickets for 24 runs.
Similarly, MI's Kumar Kartikeya, the debutant spinner, in four overs took one wicket and gave a mere 19 runs away. Likewise, Daniel Sams took a wicket for 32 runs.
In the second innings, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma held the MI ship after a fall of early wickets. Yadav scored a stupendous 50 from 36 balls. Following a strong beginning, MI lost its openers, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan in quick succession.
Ashwin removed Sharma for a mere 2 runs and while Kishan hit 25 from 18 runs, Trent Boult managed to get his wicket. Moreover, following the dismissal of Yadav and Verma, it was T. David supported by Keiron Pollard on the other end that took the MI towards a victory.

It was a day of double celebrations for the Mumbai Indians since apart from winning their first game in this year's edition of the IPL, it was also captain Rohit Sharma's birthday.
